Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

A core system for managing business resources such as finance, inventory, purchasing, and operations.

Definition

An ERP centralizes records and processes that many departments depend on. Its strength is operational consistency; its complexity comes from the many rules, data relationships, and integrations it must support.

Why it matters

ERP data often drives the financial and operational truth of the organization, which makes integration choices consequential.

Business example

A distributor connects its ERP to its customer portal so stock availability and order status stay current without manual updates.

When to use it

Use it when multiple operational functions need consistent shared records and controls.

When not to use it

Do not force every experimental or customer-facing workflow into the ERP when a separate system is more appropriate.

How Automathing approaches it

We respect the ERP as a system of record while designing integrations that avoid fragile customizations.
